Annual college costs can easily get to be 25% to 50% of a family’s yearly income. For most people, this is a huge burden. But many families look at the base cost of college and don’t consider the different financial aid packages and options that are available. The forms can be complicated and the options can be confusing. There are options such as scholarships, grants, and loans, and many people feel overwhelmed by the process of finding the right financial aid possibilities for their family. A Financial Aid Consultant will help your child find the best options that will give them the lowest out of pocket cost for a college education.

Certified Financial Aid Consultants are trained in the different ways to fund college. They can help families identify areas of possible financial aid that they may not have considered before. This includes showing families how to negotiate with the colleges themselves to get the maximum benefit for their child. Many families don’t realize that most colleges have scholarships and aid money available, based on both merit and need. This money can significantly reduce the cost of college expenses. In addition to helping families identify what the best financial aid options are, a Financial Aid Consultant will help them fill out the FAFSA, which is required for most financial aid awards. A Financial Aid Consultant can help families make college more affordable. The sooner families start planning for college the more money they can save.

Parents who are looking at sending their child to college, may be bewildered by the amount of costs that are involved. The current average cost a year for tuition, fees, room and board at a public 4 year college is $12,796. If a child wants to go to a private school then the costs are even higher. The average cost a year for a 4 year private college is $22,218. Considering that the average national wage that was earned in 2010 was $41,673.83 these costs can represent a large burden to families, especially if they don’t plan for them in advance.

Barry Sysler, a Certified Educational Planner and President of Academic Directions states, “The sooner a family consults with a Financial Aid Advisor, the more money they are typically able to save on college costs”. He recommends that most families start planning when their children are in middle school, although consulting a financial aid advisor can help at any point in the process, even through the child’s senior year. Starting early allows families to structure their finances in a way that gives them the maximum amount of benefits. It also allows for ample time to identify and apply for scholarships or grants, which never have to be paid back. Planning for college expenses is important for families that want to be able to fund their children’s college education without causing financial hardship for themselves. Starting early is always the best way to go, but planning at any point is far better than not planning at all.

The cost of college continues to rise. Costs of college have doubled since 1988 and there hasn’t been an increase in the amount of funds available in government subsidized student loans since 1992. It is maxed out at $23,000 for an entire four year degree. In addition median income has barely risen since 1988, staying at about the same level of $33,000 for two decades. At a time when family incomes are not keeping pace with rising college costs more and more of the burden is being shifted to families to pay for a larger percentage of their children’s college education on their own.

Getting creative with college tuition solutions is now a necessity. Families are turning to the services of Certified Educational Planners to help them find funding for their children’s college educations. These consultants can help families identify college tuition solutions that they may have overlooked. Many families assume if they don’t qualify for government subsidized student loans or grants that they don’t qualify for any financial aid. But what they don’t know is that many colleges have private programs that can greatly reduce the costs of tuition, room, and board for most families. A Financial Aid Consultant can help guide a family through the process of identifying the college that will give them the best financial aid package. They will also help the family to organize their finances and find other financial aid options to get the maximum savings possible.

Federal student aid is the type that people think of the most often. To qualify for federal student aid, and most other types of financial assistance, students need to fill out a FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The types of financial aid assistance that are available through the federal programs include work-study programs, federal loans for students, and grants. The government funds $150 billion dollars for these financial aid programs every year.

In addition to federal student aid there are many other types of financial aid assistance available to students. One of the most overlooked types is the aid that the colleges themselves give out. Many colleges will reduce their tuition for incoming students in the form of need based or merit based scholarships. These discounts can be significant, and save families a great deal of money. In addition to college based scholarships, there are other scholarships available based on many other factors. These factors can include groups that students belong to, academic achievement, sports achievement, ethnicity, and workplace affiliation. To find the most financial aid assistance for your specific student’s situation, you may want to consider working with a Certified Educational Planner. Because of their training and certification, these professionals often find financial aid opportunities that families applying for the first time may miss. They can help maximize a family’s financial aid assistance package and minimize the expenses that the family is expected to pay.

A family that has children going to college is often facing one of the most difficult financial times of their lives. College costs can stretch budgets to the breaking point. But college is important. In October 2011, college graduates had an unemployment rate of only 4.4%, while high school graduates had an unemployment rate of 9.6%. Having a college degree cuts a person’s chances of being unemployed by over half. Also, many economists say that one of the reasons that we have such high unemployment in this country currently is because too few people have a college degree and the skills that qualify them for higher level jobs. While college is expensive, the data suggests that it is worth the expense.

One of the ways that most families can minimize the amount they have to pay for college is to consult a Certified Educational Planner. These consultants often start working with families while their children are in middle school. This is the best time to get started with financial aid planning for college, because it lets the families have the time to get their finances in order before it is time to start applying to college. A Certified Educational Planner will guide the family through the process of identifying possible grants, scholarships, and other school based financial aid packages and will help them get the maximum financial aid benefit that they qualify for. This type of consultant also helps families complete all the necessary paperwork in the correct time frames. A Certified Educational Planner can help families minimize their financial burden as it relates to college by helping them identify all of the opportunities they have for financial aid.

With the high unemployment rates nationally, a college education is more important than ever.

With the high unemployment rates nationally, a college education is more important than ever. College graduates have less than half of the unemployment rate of the US average, with only 4.4% of people who hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher being unemployed. In addition college graduates earn nearly $1,000,000 dollars a year more than their counterparts with a high school diploma. Unfortunately, even though the benefits are great, the cost of college keeps going up. Public 4 year institutions raised their rates by more than 8% last year, which is more than double the rate of inflation.

For middle class and upper middle class families, affording a college education for their children has often become a struggle. They want their children to have the advantages of higher level education, but find it difficult to figure out how to pay for it without college financial aid help. The good news is that there is a fair amount of assistance available for college students, but families need to know where and how to find the best aid package for their circumstances. Many parents are choosing to seek the help of a Financial Aid Counselor. These certified professionals help families find the most college financial aid help possible. They assist them in navigating the sometimes complex system of financial aid and help them identify opportunities that both the parents and student may have overlooked or not known about. Getting financial aid help is possible, and with the right help going to college to get a degree is still an accessible goal.

While most colleges have financial aid services, many families are also consulting with Certified Educational Planners. These professionals provide a private road map for families seeking to put together the best financial aid package they can for their children’s college tuition, room and board. Instead of a one size fits all approach, they are able to take the time and learn about a family’s specific needs and situation. This way they can identify opportunities for financial aid that colleges may have missed.

One of the areas in which Certified Educational Planners excel, is understanding how to get the most out of the packages that are offered by individual colleges. They can guide students to apply at colleges that have a history of giving large financial aid packages to people who fit their particular profile. They will also guide families in filling out the needed forms, and help them organize their finances to get the most benefits possible. Barry Sysler, President of Academic Directions and Certified Education Planner, says that “Most Certified Education Planners can save family’s much more money than the college financial aid services. Because they get to know individual students and families, consultants can often identify specific avenues for financial aid that colleges may not bring up.” Putting together the best possible financial aid package is crucial to most families. It can mean the difference between their children enjoying college and getting the most out of the experience or being stressed about the amount of money they are taking on in debt.

This can make it hard for students to become independent adults and be successful living on their own. Understanding all the possible college tuition solutions available to them can help families reduce the need for student debt which helps their children get off to a solid start in their adult lives.

While it may not be possible to avoid some student loan debt, it is possible to reduce the amount needed by maximizing other types of financial aid. This includes scholarships, grants, and financial aid packages offered by colleges on the basis of merit or need. The options can be confusing to families who have never had to fund a child’s college, and many of these families turn to the expertise of a Certified Educational Planner to help guide them through the process. Otherwise known as Financial Aid Consultants, these professionals help families to identify specific college tuition solutions that reduce the out of pocket expenses of the student. Barry Sysler, a Certified Educational Planner and President of Academic Directions, stated that “Financial Aid Consultants can identify college tuition solutions that most families are not aware of or overlook. This can result in significant savings on college expenses and greatly reduce the need for student loans.” Families using Certified Financial Aid Consultants can save a great deal of money on their college expenses.

A College Financial Aid Advisor is a Certified Educational Planner who can help students get the maximum amount of financial aid for college. This reduces the amount of out of pocket expenses a family needs to pay for their child’s college education. It also reduces the need for taking out loans to pay for college. Students who take out loans have to pay back an average of $25,250. This places a large burden on both the students and their families. Many college students cannot afford to move out on their own once they are done with their degree. This is due in large part to the debt they take on while in college. Part or all of this debt can be avoided by getting the best financial aid package possible.

A College Financial Aid Advisor can help students save on college expenses at any time during the process of applying for college, but the best results happen when families start planning well in advance. It is recommended that families start the planning process while their children are in middle school to maximize financial aid benefits. This planning helps a College Financial Aid Advisor to assist families in structuring their finances to get the best aid package possible. It also gives the advisor plenty of time to identify the best programs and strategies for a specific family situation. Many people do not realize that the listed cost of college does not have to be the actual cost of college, and that they may be able to afford the school of their dreams with proper planning. A College Financial Aid Advisor can help families to identify and take advantage of college funding opportunities that are easy to overlook.

Many an educated person has fallen prey to these insidious college financial aid scams. Here are some things to look for to differentiate the legit financial aid programs from the scams:

No scholarships or grants charge you money outside of some minimal application fees (rare).

Excessive financial information such as bank account numbers can be a scam.

True scholarships and grants don’t give guarantees that you’ll be accepted.

Received a letter without even applying for it? Definitely a scam.

Bottom line, protect your personal information especially financial information and trust your instincts. Also, read their terms and conditions carefully. Don’t be afraid to research the company or organization offering the program. Make sure that they are part of a legal entity giving away scholarships and grants!
